#8: Alcohol
A Toxic Love...
1) This week’s Pizza Slice
Hello there! :)
Wowww, it’s been so long since I wrote a newsletter. I was caught up in my exams and everything. So I thought I’d post again during my summer break. I know I was supposed to post it yesterday, but it’s okay, right? :)
How are you guys?? I hope all of you are doing really well. I’ve officially completed ONE FULL YEAR at university!!! It feels like just yesterday I wrote my entrance exam, and now a whole year has passed. Time really does fly…
This week, I wanted to share a small incident that left a mark on me. My dad and I went to the vegetable store near our house, and that’s where we met someone who told us that his kidneys had completely stopped functioning. He’s been undergoing dialysis treatment twice a week for the past two years. Back when he started, there were 45 people receiving the same treatment—today, only 20 remain. 25 of them have passed away.
The doctors have given him a life expectancy of four years, though there are cases of people surviving for 10–15 years. After hearing the whole story, I felt really heavy. Knowing that your time is limited is like living through your worst nightmare. That’s when I realised how dangerous certain lifestyle choices—like drinking—can be.
In college, drinking and smoking are often things many of us want to try “just for fun.” It’s considered cool or exciting, and even though we know it’s bad for our health, our age and hormones tend to blur that reality. Some of us fall into the trap, and it takes years to break free.
After hearing that man’s story, I don’t think I ever want to try alcohol. It’s not easy to stop after “just one time.” If you like how it feels the first time, there’s a good chance you’ll want to try it again… and again.
I’m not here to give you “boomer” advice (though maybe I already have 😅), telling you to never drink or smoke. You can make your own choices—preferably with your parents’ or guardians’ awareness. But please, never pressure someone else into trying it. Pulling others into a bad decision doesn’t make it any better. If you ever do try it, make sure it’s in a safe space, because being high affects your awareness, and most importantly, have control. Don’t let it become an addiction that ruins your life and the lives of those around you.
Alcohol may give temporary relief, but it’s never the solution.
I really wanted to talk about this because it genuinely affected me. I hope it makes you think, too—and maybe even puts a little distance between you and alcohol. Take care, and have a great day and week ahead! See you guys next week :) 🥰
